 DATA AND STATISTICS

Methamphetamine is one of the most serious drug threats in Wyoming and was at epidemic levels in 2005.  Until federal law was established to move pseudoephedrine behind pharmacy counters, clandestine methamphetamine labs were at epidemic levels.  Since then, seizures have begun to decline (see Cheyenne-Laramie County Meth Initiative’s Data Dashboard).

In the 2002-2005 National Survey on Drug Use and Health meth results, Wyoming had the 2nd highest overall use rate, the 3rd highest use rate for youth ages 12 – 17, and the highest use rate for young adults ages 18-25.

According to 2004-2007 data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 1.62% of persons aged 12 or older in Wyoming reported using methamphetamine within the past year. (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007).

Results of a 2007 survey of Wyoming students show that approximately 5.8% of 9th graders, 5.5% of 10th graders, 7.1% of 11th graders, and 5.3% of 12th graders reported using methamphetamine at least once during their lifetimes. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Youth Online: Comprehensive Results, 2007).
